Car scrapping and payment of scrapping premium

When you own a car and want to scrap it, you can get a scrapping premium if you are the last registered owner. The scrapping premium is DKK 2,770 for cases created from the 1st of January 2026.

For citizens

If you are a citizen and the car is registered under your personal identification number (CPR) you must apply for a scrapping premium digitally on Borger.dk

If you are to scrap the car on behalf of a company and the car is registered with a CVR number, you must apply digitally on Virk.dk

Receive a scrappage premium when you hand over your end-of-life vehicle

If you hand over a passenger car (M1) or a van (N1) with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 3,500 kg to an environmentally approved car breaker for scrapping, you are entitled to a tax-free scrappage premium of DKK 2,770.

The scheme applies to:

• Passenger cars with seating for up to nine people, including the driver (M1)
• Vans with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 3,500 kg (N1)

If the vehicle is no longer roadworthy, the car breaker can often arrange collection. Any costs for collection must be agreed directly with the car breaker.

Hand over your vehicle free of charge

You are entitled to hand over your vehicle to an approved car breaker or vehicle importer free of charge.

The car breaker must also assist you, at no cost, with completing the electronic Certificate of Destruction in the Digital Payment System (DUS), enabling the scrappage premium to be paid.

If you require additional assistance, such as help with returning the licence plates, the car breaker may charge an administration fee for that service.

The scrapping premium is paid if you comply with the following criteria:

Registered owner
You must be the last registered owner of the car. This means that it is your CPR number and the car’s registration number that is found in the Danish motor vehicles register. You may check your registration certificate. If you are not the last registered owner of the car you may in very specific cases apply for an exemption through the digital system.

Car is de-registered
Your car must be de-registered from the Danish motor vehicles register after 30 March 2000.
Car is delivered to approved car breaker
Your car must be picked up or delivered to a car breaker approved by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. Dealers and repair shops can agree with approved car breakers to be points of delivery.

Car must not be exported
Your car must not be exported later. This means that it must not be registered in another country after de-registration in the Danish motor vehicles register, and you must not have claimed refund of registration fee.
