Car scrapping and payment of scrapping premium

When you own a car and want to scrap it, you can get a scrapping premium of DKK 2,200 if you are the last registered owner.

For citizens

If you are a citizen and the car is registered under your personal identification number (CPR) you must apply for a scrapping premium digitally on Borger.dk

Apply with MitID on Borger.dk

For businesses

If you are to scrap the car on behalf of a company and the car is registered with a CVR number, you must apply digitally on Virk.dk

Money for your old car

Scrapping reimbursement, more widely known as scrapping premium is a scheme applying to passenger vehicles (M1) for no more than 9 persons incl. the driver, and small trucks (N1) not exceeding 3,500 kg. When you take in your car for scrapping and environmental treatment with an environmentally approved car breaker you are entitled to a tax free scrapping premium of DKK 2,200. If you cannot drive your car to the car breaker, you can have it picked up. Do remember to ask the car breaker if this service will be charged.

You are entitled to deliver your car to car breakers and importers free of charge. In addition and without any charges, the car breaker must help you complete your electronic certificate of destruction in the Digital disbursement system (DUS), so you can retrieve your scrapping premium.

If, however, you need more assistance, for instance for taking back the license plate, the car breaker can charge an administration fee for this additional work.

Car scrapping – How it is done

  1. Go to Borger.dk or Virk.dk
    If your car is registered under your CPR number, go to Borger.dk. If your car is registered under a company CVR number, go to Virk.dk. You may search for “skrotpræmie” (scrapping premium) and go to the self-service solution DUS (Digital disbursement system).

  2. Search out the car
    Click start and have your private MitID or your business’s MitID Erhverv at hand. Search out and select the car by its registration number (license plate) and select a car breaker from the list. Exempt from NemID/MitID? Find more information below.

  3. Approval
    Save and approve the scrapping request and click finish. Now wait for the car breaker to accept his part of the digital system.

  4. How do I take in the car?
    Meanwhile, you can contact the car breaker and agree with him when to take in the car or whether it should be picked up.

  5. De-register the car
    Also agree with the car breaker whether he de-registers the car, or if you should do it yourself. Most car breakers offer to handle all practical matters with de-registration in the Danish motor vehicles register.

  6. Certificate of destruction
    Keep an eye on your electronic mailbox (Digital Post or e-Boks). Once the car has been scrapped, a certificate of destruction is sent to your Digital Post or e-Boks. If you are exempt from digital mail, you will be notified by an ordinary letter.

  7. Payment of scrapping premium
    We will pay your scrapping premium of DKK 2,200 to your NemKonto (your official bank account) no later than two weeks after scrapping of the car and reception of your certificate of destruction. The certificate is sent to your digital mailbox, or alternatively as an ordinary letter.

The scrapping premium is paid if you comply with the following criteria:

  • Registered owner
    You must be the last registered owner of the car. This means that it is your CPR number and the car’s registration number that is found in the Danish motor vehicles register. You may check your registration certificate. If you are not the last registered owner of the car you may in very specific cases apply for an exemption through the digital system.

  • Car is de-registered
    Your car must be de-registered from the Danish motor vehicles register after 30 March 2000.

  • Car is delivered to approved car breaker
    Your car must be picked up or delivered to a car breaker approved by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. Dealers and repair shops can agree with approved car breakers to be points of delivery.

  • Car must not be exported
    Your car must not be exported later. This means that it must not be registered in another country after de-registration in the Danish motor vehicles register, and you must not have claimed refund of registration fee.

Other cases

If you are not the registered owner of the car in the Danish motor vehicles register you can choose these other types of case when you create a case on your car and apply for the scrapping premium:

Legal owner – You are the (legal) owner of the car, but it is not registered in your name. Generally, no scrapping premium is paid to the legal owner; there must be a match between the registration number of the car and the owner appearing from the Danish motor vehicles register.

Apply for dispensation – You own the car, but it is not registered in your name; you believe to be entitled to receive the scrapping premium. You upload an exemption application demonstrating that the case is special. In our case handling, we decide whether it is possible to pay out the scrapping premium.

Administrator of the estate – You are the administrator of the estate or the heir to a car that is to be scrapped. You upload the letter of administration from the probate court to document ownership; the scrapping premium will be paid out after case handling.

Car scrapped abroad – you are the registered owner of a car that has been scrapped abroad. The foreign certificate of destruction is uploaded to document the case; the scrapping premium will be paid out after case handling.

If you have been exempted from NemID/MitID as a citizen, you cannot scrap your car through borger.dk.

Instead, contact an approved car breaker who can create the scrapping case on your behalf.  See list of approved car breakers

Please bring the following documents to the car breaker: 

  • Identity document: Health insurance card or driver’s license (no need for a photo ID).
  • Form for exemption from digital mail can be requested from the local authority (contact Borgerservice/Citizen’s service)
  • Registration certificate of vehicle
  • You must sign a Solemn Declaration at the car breaker’s

There will be a manual case handling of approx. two weeks.

If payment of scrapping premium has been refused, you can file a complaint to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, who is the appeal body; this must be done no later than four weeks after having received the refusal.

This is done by sending an email to bilskrot@mst.dk. In your email, please state the registration number of the car and motivate why you find that you are entitled to receive the scrapping premium.

Your scrapping premium is paid to your NemKonto (your official bank account) no later than two weeks after reception of your certificate of destruction.

If you have not received the money, please send an email to info@producentansvar.dk, stating registration number of the car, and registration and account number of your bank. If you have a NemKonto, please state this account number.

Please contact the car breaker and ask him to cancel the case. The car breaker must create the case as “Borger uden MitID” (citizen without a MitID ).

The 2021 diesel scrapping scheme started payments on 6 April 2021 and is closed by 31. dec. 2021 at midnight.

Scrap-cases entered up to closing time will be paid in the next couple of days.

Either contact the car breaker you have chosen and ask if he can do it, or take the license plate to a vehicles registration office or to a vehicles inspection shop with a vehicles registration office.

If you are registered as the personal owner of the car

The person listed on the letter of administration from the probate court as the heir or the administrator of the estate can create the case. Under ownership, choose “Jeg er bobestyrer/arving” (I am the administrator of the estate/heir) and upload the letter of administration from the probate court as documentation.

If you are a private person and administrator of the estate/heir
Go to borger.dk and search for “Skrotpræmie for bil” (scrapping premium for cars) under “Menu” in the top right-hand corner. Then click “selvbetjening:  Ansøg om skrotningsgodtgørelse” (self-service – apply for scrapping premium). Click the green button “Videre” (continue) and log in with MitID. This means that a case has already been created for the car. If the car breaker has created the case, you can approve it as described below. If you don’t know about the case, please contact us.

If you are registered as the personal owner of the car

The scrapping premium will be paid within two weeks. It amounts to DKK 2,200 and is paid to your NemKonto (your official bank account).

”Salgsbil med transport af krav på godtgørelse” (car sold with transfer of claim for premium) means that you have sold the car to a car breaker. He or she can now resell the car or scrap it within six months.

If you approve the scrapping request, you waiver the scrapping premium which is transferred to the car breaker.

However, you are not obliged to act if you do not have an agreement with the car breaker.

You, the owner of the car, must contact the mortgagee to ask if you can scrap the car. Car breakers are not obliged to ensure that the car is not mortgaged before scrapping a car for another owner.
