Is your product packaging (packaging can be either empty or filled)?

Your product is packaging if it is used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery and presentation of goods.

Which type of packaging fits best your product?

Primary packaging (sales packaging)

Packaging making up together with a product a commodity that is sold at a point of sale to consumers or a company.

Secondary packaging (grouped packaging)

Packaging making up a grouping of sales units at a point of sale whether or not it is sold as such to a consumer or is only used, for instance, to fill the shelves at a point of sale. It must be possible to remove the packaging from the product without affecting its characteristics.

Tertiary packaging (transport packaging)

Packaging conceived so as to facilitate handling and transport of a number of sales units or grouped packagings in order to prevent physical handling and transport damage.

Service packaging

Packaging intended to be filled at a point of sale from where it is sold to a company or a consumer. This may be, for instance, a pizza box.

Empty cups for beverages or beverage containers complying with all three criteria:

1) The product consists of plastic in whole or in part, 2) The product is intended to be used only once, 3) The product is not intended to be filled at a point of sale.

Can the packaging be separated from the packed product?

Examples are rolls from toilet paper, matchboxes, or caps for beverages that are empty after use. Examples of packaging that cannot be separated from the product during use are printer cartridges, tea bags, or coffee capsules that are discarded together with the used coffee product.

Reusable packaging is packaging conceived and designed for being refilled or reused for the same purpose for which it was conceived. Reusable packaging is collected and reused several times.

Which material does your packaging consist of?

If your packaging consists of several different materials that cannot be readily separated, you must choose the primary material of the packaging. By contrast, if the materials can be readily separated you must take the test for each material.
