Frequently asked questions about producer responsibility
On this page, you can see how to access our register:
You can check if your business is subject to producer responsibility by taking our online test.
Take the test on the homepage of our website or click here
Note! Despite the term, the duty to register and report applies to importers as well as producers – the rules applying to both types are the same.
What’s the cost? Is it a tax?
Producer responsibility has certain implications, both in the form of costs and revenues. Overall, these are a one-off fee for registration and an annual quantity-based fee related to quantities placed on the Danish market in a calendar year. In addition, membership of a collective scheme also entails some costs.
However, there is only one statutory fee (and one that only applies to portable batteries and SKAT). Fee rates are calculated by DPA based on annual reporting of quantities, and they are approved by the Minister for the Environment. The fee rates are published annually on the DPA website.
Since there is often a positive value of the resources recovered in the environmental treatment of waste electronics, batteries, and vehicles, there may be fine revenues if the duty of take-back and treatment is organised in a smooth way.
You can calculate your statutory costs in our online calculator, where you can enter the expected annual quantities placed on the market and see what you should expect to pay for your registration and administration of the reporting system.
If you cannot search out your registration in the public part of the register or see your registration certificate, you have forgotten something.
Most often, one or both below items are missing:
- Selection of product category/-ies
- Digital signature of “Confirmation”
Therefore, log in once more with MitID Erhverv and go to menu item “Categories and quantities”. Select the categories corresponding to your products and end-users, (for batteries it’s substance groups) and click SAVE.
Then proceed to the menu item “Confirmation” and sign it digitally with the business’s MitID Erhverv or touch through Penneo.
When this has been done, the menu item “Confirmation” changes to “Registration certificate”, and your registration is officially approved.
NOTE! Are you importing portable batteries? See particular issues relating to this type of batteries
On this page, you can see how to access our register:
Annual reporting for electronics must be completed.
- First and foremost, make sure that you or your compliance scheme has completed the annual reporting.
- When you are logged onto the producer register you must choose the menu item “Statements”.
- Answer the questions here and find out whether you have to make an Auditor’s attestation or a Management’s statement.
- If you need to make an auditor’s attestation you must invite your auditor:
- Click the green button, fill in the CVR number of the audit firm, name and e-mail of the auditor, and send the e-mail.
- Now the auditor can accept and thereby get access to those of your data that he/she needs.
The reporting period is every year from 1 January. In this period, you will report as a producer/importer all you have sold on the Danish market in the previous calendar year.
You can yourself select and deselect categories, so it fits with your range of products. The years are shown in the tabs on the page. The year open for reporting is the previous calendar year.
For Electronics, Batteries and Vehicles:
Please log into the producer register; under the menu item “Category selection and reporting”, under Compliance schemes you can choose a compliance scheme in the drop-down list.
For Packaging, Single-use plastics and Fishing gear:
Follow the guide (ind Danish)

Producer responsibility in the EU
In most other EU countries, the rules are similar to what we have in Denmark: the first level of the distribution chain has the duty of registration and reporting. This means that – unless you sell directly to end-users – the dealer in the recipient country (in their role of importers) has the producer responsibility and must therefore register and report to the national register in that country. In other words, you are not the one to do it.
If, however, you sell directly to end-users you need an authorised representative in the recipient country. In such cases you can contact the national registers to hear about your options. Shortcuts for the registers are gathered with the European WEEE Registers Network (EWRN).
